How to spot the leader within your child

Five early signs of leadership and how to nurture them at home before they show in the field.

Every child carries a seed of leadership, but it shows differently: one leads with their voice, another with calm, a third with ideas. Here are five early signs we notice in the field, and how to nurture them at home.

Five early signs

First, initiative: they start without being asked. Second, owning mistakes: they can say “that was me” without excuses. Third, listening: they hear their friends out before pushing their view. Fourth, gathering: other kids naturally orbit them in play. Fifth, asking why: they want to understand things, not just accept them.

Do not worry if you cannot find all five at once. One sign that gets watered and grown is worth more than five left unattended.

How to grow them at home

Tie initiative to appreciation, not perfection: thank the attempt even when the result is a small mess. Give them real decisions to make: what is for dinner, which route do we take. And train listening by listening to them first, all the way to the end.

Then place them in an environment that tests and waters these seeds: a team, a scout patrol, a camp. At Darb we watch these five signs turn into lasting behavior when they meet the right opportunity and the right mentoring.
